the beginnings to my manifesto

Posted in Uncategorized by washleyill on November 9, 2009

I’ve always felt a certain way about the creative process behind art but until recently I hadn’t ever gathered the motivation to organize my thoughts and put them into words.   I was posed with a few questions regarding the meaning and concept behind my work a few months ago and ever since I’ve been itching to write a manifesto.

I’ve spent a lot of my down time recently (not) reflecting on art as well as gathering input from friends.  I have been focusing primarily on what message I’m trying to convey (or not), what makes art (perhaps an unanswerable question), and what feelings (or not) I want to invoke.   I really don’t want to say anything and that’s something I know I feel strongly about.  I’m anticipating I’ll catch some flack for this so I’m preparing to write a manifesto.  I’m sure I’m not the first and I’m sure I’m not alone so is anyone interested in helping?

…and It’s not going to be an “anti-conceptual art diatribe,” but rather a reflection on how simplicity is underrated.  It’s impossible to write the rules for art or know the truth behind anything for that matter, so let’s all get along and marvel in life’s mysteries.  The universe works in amazing ways.

this will probably take a while, stay tuned…

Recently Tory sent out an email to my artist circle regarding a fractal program we used during our introductory computer graphics class.  This got me reminiscing…

“When they were in school, Peter used to say that everything you do is a self-portrait. It might look like Saint George and the Dragon or The Rape of the Sabine Women, but the angle you use, the lighting, the composition, the technique, they’re all you. Even the reason why you chose this scene, it’s you. You are every color and brushstroke.
Peter used to say, “The only thing an artist can do is describe his own face.”
You’re doomed to being you.
This, he says, leaves us free to draw anything, since we’re only drawing ourselves.
Your handwriting. The way you walk. Which china pattern you choose. It’s all giving you away. Everything you do shows your hand.
Everything is a self-portrait.
Everything is a diary.”

again, the rocks!

Posted in Uncategorized by washleyill on October 18, 2009

Why?
Ever since I was a wee child I have had a fascination with rocks. Mostly precious gems and such as we used to “pan” for them at a place in North Carolina called “Beach Gemstones.” They’d give you a big old bucket of mountain dirt and we Wills would sit on stools next to a water chute as Dad would scoop the mixture into our pans.

So as you can imagine, I’ve accumulated a ridiculous amount of gemstones over the years. They’re now displayed in my fireplace in what most people say resembles a shrine. I digress…In short, I love rocks.

How?
One day I was on a walk around the yard with my cat friend and I started collecting rocks. I’m not sure what possessed me to start painting them, because I really don’t paint much, but I liked how they turned out. A week later I took the first batch (the color blind pattern series) to my critique group and they told me to keep going. I continued to paint.

What now?
I now have a handful of themed rock groups and I plan on making even more. I’m working on a way to make them durable (resin, spray gloss, etc) as well as a way to display them. Eventually I’ll start pegging them together in interesting shapes. There are so many possibilities, it’s hard to choose which direction to go next.

Oh yes, and I must thank the kind man at Lyngso for giving me two sample bags of polished river rocks.
